Learning Power Chords For Electric Guitar

In this article we are going to teach something that you’ll love if you’re learning to play rock guitar. What are we going to teach you?

Simply this: Power Chords.

Power chords are the staple of rock guitar. And if you can play barre chords, you’re already there… because power chords are much easier.

So what are they?

Power chords are basically the E and A shape barre chords, but you only need to play the Low E and A strings. A diagram would help, so here’s one:

-------------------------------------------------- <-- High E
--------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------3------------------
-------------------1------------------------------- <-- Low E

That is a basic E shaped power chord. There’s no fret markers on my diagram, but that third finger is on the second fret away from the first finger, okay?

You can also play the power chord with an octave for a fuller sound. Sound complicated? It’s not. Check the diagram:

-------------------------------------------------- <-- High E
--------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------4-----------------
--------------------------------3------------------
-------------------1------------------------------- <-- Low E

Simple, huh?

You name them just the same as the barre chords, by the way.

Here’s the A shaped power chord:

-------------------------------------------------- <-- High E
--------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------4---------------
----------------------------------3---------------
-------------------1------------------------------
X------------------------------------------------- <-- Low E

If you’re into rock music, you’ll have a lot of fun with these. Many songs in modern music and rock music really heavily on power chords. With a little experimentation, it’s also quite easy to get your own riffs and styles going, too.
