Learning The Slide Technique

The term “slide” has many different meanings to a guitarist. It can mean running one or more fingers of the left hand along the length of a string.

It also means playing the guitar with a metal or glass tube that fits over on over the fingers of the left hand to achieve a similar effect. And to make it a little more confusing for beginners, it also means the actual name of the glass or metal tube.

Here’s a quick exercise for you to try to get to grips with the slide:

Put your first finger on the 7th fret of the 1st string.

Play the note.

While the note is ringing, move your hand firmly along the fretboard until your first finger is on the 12th fret.

Sliding is a great technique for electric guitar, and it’s something worth experimenting with. Sliding, along with pull-offs, hammer-ons, and vibrato are the keys to giving your electric guitar playing added life.
